If you want to create a 360 degree array of sound, rather than a spotlight of audio created by traditional speaker pairs, here’s a cheap DIY project to do just that with inexpensive speakers and IKEA bowls.
Here’s what you’ll need:
- Eight loud speakers
- Four speaker terminals
- Two large bowls (the IKEA Reda bowls used in the project are no longer sold, unfortunately)
- Weather stripping
- Speaker wire
- Heat shrink tubing
- A high-speed rotary tool with a #409 cutoff wheel and a #561 cutting bit
- Soldering iron and solder
- Wire cutters/strippers
- Scissors
- Pencil
- Earplugs and safety glasses
Although not a DIY project for the faint of heart, it’s not the most complicated either. The process consists of cutting holes in the bowls, attaching the speakers to the bowls, soldering the speaker wire to the speakers and the speaker terminals, and put the bowls together. Take an afternoon to put this together and you’ll soon be enjoying music in all directions.
